Creating a Message

Scot's Mailing List sends multi-part email messages so it is important to have both a text and html version of the message. Since most email readers can handle html messages, you can optionally use the text area to put in a note mentioning that a modern email reader would be a good idea.

The subject of the message shows is what the recipients will see as the subject in their email reader.

Tokens

Standard token list:

  • %email%
  • %first_name%
  • %last_name%
  • %phone%
  • %address%
  • %city%
  • %state%
  • %postal%
  • %country%
  • %homepage%
  • %name% (inserts full name)
  • %mailing_list% (mailing list name)

Tokens are a nice help when you want to personalize the message. The idea is simple. You put a token in the message where you want certain information to appear. The available tokens are listed when you create or edit a message.

If your message starts with:

Dear Sam,
Take a look at our new product!
The way to create that message is to use the %first_name% token like this:
Dear %first_name%,
Take a look at our new product!

Special Tokens:

%unsubscribe% puts the unsubsribe link into the message. If you do not use this token, your message recipient will not be able to unsubscribe from your mailing list, and that's illegal.

%validate% places a validation link in the verification message so that when someone signs up for the list, they have something to click on when the email verification message gets sent out.

%tracker% puts a tracking code in the html message so you can check message stats to see how many times the message has been viewed and by who.

%invite% -- insert the invitation link - should be used for invitation messages

%archive% -- inserts a link the recipient can click on to view the html message- message subject is used as link text

%friend%clickable text% -- inserts a link to invite a friend (use custom messages for setup). Example: %friend%click here to invite a friend!%
